Why Learn Italian?

Where is Italian Spoken?

The Italian Language

Italian is the official language of Italy and the Vatican. It is spoken by over 85 million people as a native language. In addition to its native country of Italy, Italian is also spoken in San Marino, Croatia (Istria County), and Slovenia (Slovenia Istria). Italians also have had a strong history of migration, and Little Italy's can be found all over the world.

Historically, Italian is of course derived directly from Latin, which was the language of the Roman Empire. While the language itself is relatively uniform across the country, there are different norms based on the regions. Different regions have different influences based on migrations and conquests by other cultures.

In recent history Italy has gone through some tough economic times, but things seem to be getting better with some recent reforms. And regardless of the economic state, Italy remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

If you've been paying attention to the political landscape in the U.S. then you've probably seen the little phrase "Obamacare" come up too many times to count. Before you get nervous, this is NOT a political post. I repeat - this is NOT a political post. :) However, something has happened in the midst of all of this that reminded us once again of the power of language. Th...

New Years Resolution – Learn A Language

I personally stopped making New Year's resolutions many years ago. Depending on the year, I either tried and failed to give up caffeine, exercise three days a week, learn a new word everyday or get up early each day to meditate and pray. As we face the end of 2014, I have been toying around with the idea of making a New Year's Resolution once again. Rather than depriving ...

You know you love language learning when…

For those of us who enjoy learning languages, we share some commonalities. Some may call us geeky (I prefer the term intellectual) but we feel a part of an elite group of people that get more than a little excited to log into our Skype lesson and get lost in a language. It’s hard for us to imagine why everyone doesn’t devote hours of his or her day to learning a new lang...
