Portuguese is a romance language and can find its bases in Latin which was brought over by the Romans during the 2nd century B.C. It was then mixed with germanic influence during the 3rd to 7th century B.C. It was not until the 12th century BC when the modern language of Portuguese took form. It was then taken across the globe by Portuguese explorers and taken to South America and Africa.
Currently Portuguese is once again gaining prevelance on the world stage primarily due to the rise of Brazil as an economic power, which is currently the most populous Portuguese speaking country.
