Why Learn Russian?

Where is it spoken?

The Russian Language

Russian is the official spoken language of Russia and some of the former Soviet States such as Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is currently estimated that approximately 160 million (2012) people in the world speak Russian as a native language. Russian has many variations across different countries but the most widely spoken one is Modern Standard Russian. Russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world.

Russian is from the Slavic family of languages and is the most widely spoken of this family. The modern Russian language started to form at the beginning of the 18th century under Peter the Great. As one would expect is started in the city of Moscow and slowly took over in other regions of the then kingdom.

In recent years, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has built up again is growing into a world super power - economically - again. It is commonly referred to as one of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), referring to the 4 most up and coming nations in the world.
