The 2016 Olympics Games are coming in Rio very soon. To help team supporters get ready for Brazil I have prepared a list of useful and fun Brazilian Portuguese phrases you may hear either in the stadiums, on the TV or walking around the streets!

1. Oi, tudo bem? = It means “how is goin’? “ easy to memorize. More formal, Como vai?

2. Bom dia = Good morning.

3. Boa tarde = Good afternoon.

4. Boa noite = Good evening/ night.

5. Obrigado =Thank you.

6.Tchau = Bye (informal)

7. Até logo = Goodbye (formal)

8. Até amanhã = See you tomorrow

9. Que horas são? = What time is it?

10. Compreende? / Entende? = Do you understand?

11. Eu quero… = It is is a very important verbal phrase to learn. I want is Eu quero in Brazil. Here some useful examples:

I want that soccer T-shirt = Eu quero aquela camisa de futebol

I want a drink = Eu quero uma bebida

I want to go out = Eu quero sair

12. Onde fica…? Onde está? =Where is…?

Where is the hotel? = Onde fica o hotel?

Where is my wallet? = Onde fica minha carteira?

13. Não sei =I don’t know

In Brazil, many people will approach you. They might trying to sell you some souvernirs or just asking you questions. Não sei is the perfect answer. Keep saying it until they give up.

14. Não entendo = I don’t understand

15. Com licença = Excuse me

16. Qual é o seu nome?= What is your name?

17. De onde você é? =Where are you from?

Some example: Eu sou dos Estados Unidos(USA)/ da Inglaterra(England).

18. Quantos anos você tem? =How old are you?

Portuguese speakers use the verb ter, which means to have. So it is like if you ask How many years do you have?

19. Você está gostando? =Are you enjoying?

20. Há quanto tempo você está no Brasil? =How long have you been in Brazil?

21. Você está com fome? Are you hungry?

22. Você tem filhos? =Do you have children?

23. O que você faz? =What do you do?

24. Você está em férias? = Are you on vacation?

25. Eu gosto de você =I like you. (Never knows)

26. Você é chata! = You are boring!

27. Desculpe me = I’m sorry

28. Como se diz _____ em português? =How do you say ______ in Portuguese?

29. Mais um! =One more!

30 . Fala sério! =Stop playing!

It literally means Talk serious. But it is like Be serious.

31. Quanto custa? =How much is it?

32. Com certeza! =Of course!

33. Tranquilo = Cool

34. Fala inglês? =Do you speak English?

35. Muito prazer =Nice to meet you

36. Não entendo =I don’t understand

37. Por favor = please (the same Spanish word)

38. Estou perdido = I’m lost ( I hope you don’t need it)

39. Pra caramba!It is used at the end of a sentence to exaggerate whatever is said. For example I was really, really late (Eu estava atrasado pra caramba!)

40.Lindo maravilhoso!It literally means beautiful/ marvelous, but it is a slang way to mean amazing/ awesome.

41.Estar com a macaca = being bad tempered (literally: being with the monkey)
