The FSI Conversational Finnish (Workbook) material can be used both as a self-guided course or with the assistance of a qualified tutor.

FSI Conversational Finnish (Workbook) - Image The exercises in the FSI Conversational Finnish Workbook are structured in the following way:
- they follow the sequence of the structural notes at the end of each unit
- the vocabulary is the same as in the corresponding dialogs or comes from previous units
- almost all have been translated into English, unless the sentences are literal quotations from the sample dialogs
- answer keys are provided so that you can work on the drills independently

How to use

1. The exercises on the audios:
a) substitution drills
- listen to the initial sentence
- wait for the use and repeat the sentence, using the given use word in the space provided on the the audios
- listen to the correct sentence

b) transformation drills
- transform a given sentence into a different one by applying certain grammatical rules, e.g., transform a positive sentence into a negative one
- say the transformed sentence in the space provided on the the audios
- listen to the correct answer

c) other types of drills with specific instructions
- some exercises should be written in before they are done orally

2. The exercises not on the audios:

- games (instructions are provided for each game)
- fill-in tasks
- mechanical practices of written homework
- classroom exercises
Finnish is the language spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside Finland. It is one of the two official languages of Finland and an official minority language in Sweden. In Sweden, both standard Finnish and Meänkieli, a Finnish dialect, are spoken. The Kven language, a dialect of Finnish, is spoken in Northern Norway.
Finnish is the eponymous member of the Finnic language family and is typologically between fusional and agglutinative languages. It modifies and inflects nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals and verbs, depending on their roles in the sentence.
