My approach is to teach things that will give the student an immediate benefit. I ask them to keep notes on things they encounter that they don't understand. Every class begins with me asking the student "Do you have any questions or problems?"
I use a hybrid style that includes reading, writing, speaking, reading and role play along with correction for errors and fluency. My goal is to have the student speaking for at least 80% of the class.
