Penobscot Language School is a non-profit center that provides language and cultural learning to the local and global communities. Our three-prong approach comprehensively addresses the importance of understanding and participating in cultural diversity and includes: 1) weekly language classes and tutorials in several languages for all ages and all levels, 2) English Immersion programs, and 3) a rich variety of cultural events. From its founding to the present, the school has served more than 6,250 Maine residents in foreign language courses and through cultural events as well as over 540 English Immersion students from more than forty countries. Now in it’s 30th year, Penobscot School continues to launch innovative programming and welcomes everyone to participate.

Penobscot Language School offers a three-week English Immersion in July and in August. The dates for the 2017 program are July 3-21 and July 31-August 18. Students may select from one of the following three options that are offered during each session:

1) Everyday Communication and Culture: This program focuses on conversational skills through a combination of classroom learning, speakers, individual tutorials and excursions.

2) Communication for Business: This program promotes the skills needed to conduct business transactions including interviewing skills, resume writing and more. Students also learn everyday conversational skills and participate in excursions.

3) English Language and Culture for Young Adults: This program focuses on teens wishing to improve their oral and written communication skills through a combination of classroom learning and excursions.

All options combine classroom learning, excursions, individual tutorials, speakers and meal preparation including shopping and kitchen duties.

All students are housed with local families. Families traveling together and requiring a rental home should contact the school as early as possible. Maine is a summer tourist destination; rentals are limited.
