Miriam was born and raised in Guanajuato City, Mexico, and holds a BA in Spanish as a Second Language from the University of Guanajuato.

During her studies there, and still today alongside other Spanish teachers, she runs cultural workshops for students — making alfeñiques (the traditional candies of Día de Muertos), and crafting alebrijes and piñatas from papier mâché, a popular Mexican art. She and her colleagues also lead guided visits to local art museums in Guanajuato to learn about traditional Mexican art.

She is inspired by sharing and interacting with people. She thinks the most important goal of learning a language is being able to speak and to learn new perspectives and otherness.

Languages describe reality, and learning a language by interacting with people helps you understand different realities. To her, it is the only way we can truly understand other cultures.

Some of her hidden talents are painting and crafting. She loves making colorful, bright paintings of landscapes and plants, red and orange skies, fluffy animals and colorful insects.

She also loves crafting alebrijes and the traditional papier mâché Lupitas dolls of Guanajuato, and enjoys visiting art museums to discover new, extravagant artists.

On some occasions she has experienced stage fright in front of a big group, or in front of people she does not know well.

• Favorite Color: All of them — quoting one of her colleagues, she needs to wear one of the rainbow colors in her outfit, and it helps her mood a lot
• Favorite Drink: Horchata, guayaba juice and tepache
• Favorite Food: Home-made burgers based on lentils or garbanzo beans, with pineapple and avocado, and mole gorditas or tortas
• Favorite Dessert: Tempura ice cream
• Favorite Animals: Her spirit animals are the snail (the one with the house) and the frog
• Favorite Shows: The Mexican pop culture satire “María de todos los Ángeles” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”
• Favorite Movie: “Sugar and Spice” — so much fun
