Emily Marzin - French Tutor

Introduction

Bonjour, I was born and raised in Brittany, France.

I have been teaching French as a Foreign Language since 2009 and working in a Self-Access Language Learning Center at the Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico (for 10 years) and Kanda University in Japan (since 2022).

I hold a bachelor's degree in language education, a master's degree in Didactics, and a Ph.D. in Education.

I am interested in sharing my cultural background (history, music, literature, traditions, ...) with students from different countries. Students say that I am a patient, fun, and optimistic teacher. Teaching is more than just a job for me, it’s a real passion. I will be more than happy to help you reach your objectives, whether it’s for leisure or for work!

During my free time, I like taking photos and travelling across Mexico.

Education

I have been teaching French for several institutions (private: Alliance Francaise, for instance, or public: State University in Mexico, for example), to different kinds of students (children, teenagers or adults), from different nationalities (American, Japanese, Brazilian, Mexican, German, Swiss, Dutch, English, Italian, Canadian, Australian, Hungarian, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Spanish...) and also in various contexts (large groups, small groups, and to individuals) focusing on their improvement goals (reading, listening, writing and speaking activities / preparing for official exams or helping with homework). I value individuality and seek to meet the needs of each student.

I am currently teaching intercultural communication to BA students. I am definitely conscious of cultural differences and I know how to raise awareness about intercultural mediation.

I am an examiner and corrector accreditation for DELF-DALF (renewed in 2020)

I am also very comfortable with online classes as it is a perfect opportunity to adjust students' schedules and favourite places to learn!

Teaching style

I have had to learn different languages myself for work or studies (English, German, Italian, and Spanish). I, therefore, understand the many challenges that one confronts, and I have many strategies and advice to share due to these experiences!

I really like adapting my methods, activities, or practice to the student's way of learning (visual type for instance). I also design my own activities (e.g., conversation sheets), which include authentic documents (e.g., podcast, videos) and pedagogical content. Teaching private classes allow me to select texts or any documents that match my learners' interests. My classes always include the practice of different skills: writing, listening, reading and speaking.

I particularly like to make students discover the culture of my native language by sharing theirs.

In my class, I like to offer different resources such as video, audio, book, picture, etc. (as updated as possible) about the student topics of interest and adapted to his/her learning style. With time, I collected much material of all kinds that I will share in my classes (books, magazines, movies,...). Also, I prefer to put the language in a real context by using authentic and original resources. As I have experienced in elaborating written pedagogical guides and resources, I also like to create my own material, to better suit the students' needs.

In general, I do not favour speaking only in the target language, unless the students ask me to, because I want students to feel comfortable.

Hobbies

I like travelling, learning languages, cooking (especially desserts), taking photos, practising yoga and meditation.

Teaching French as a second language since 2009.

I speak a total of 6 languages:

I've visited or lived in the following countries: México, Japan, most Europeans countries, EEUU, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, China, Turkey, Cuba, ...
