Defense Language Institute Polish - Image This phase consists of 86 lessons, plus 30 area enrichment narratives. This phase is designed so it can be utilized for self-study, group-study, or instructor-assisted study. The first 47 lessons of this phase are arranged as a review of essential grammar elements and basic vocabu-lary. The linguist should complete these lessons in the order that they are presented, however, he/she should proceed through the lessons at their own individual pace.

The next 39 lessons stress application of all essential grammar aspects, reading and advance vocabulary. These lessons should be complete in the order they are presented accomplishing all lesson requirements. The remaining lessons in this phase consisted of narratives dealing with Polish history, geography, commerce, and social customs. These lessons-once again apply all grammar covered in previous lesson and introduce advance vocabulary. The linguist should complete requirements in each lesson.

Polish is a language of the Lechitic subgroup of West Slavic languages, used throughout Poland (being that country's official language) and by Polish minorities in other countries. Its written standard is the Polish alphabet, which has several additions to the letters of the basic Latin script. Despite the pressure of non-Polish administrations in Poland (during the 19th and early 20th centuries) resulting from Partitions of Poland, who often attempted to suppress the Polish language, a rich literature has developed over the centuries, and the language is currently the largest, in terms of speakers, of the West Slavic group. It is also the second most widely spoken Slavic language, after Russian and ahead of Ukrainian.

Polish is spoken in: Poland

Polish is also called: Polnisch, Polski
